Each year, an ever-increasing number of men, women and their families are joining Walk a Mile in Her Shoes. Rebuilding Hope, the Sexual Assault Center for Pierce County is proud to host the 12th year of our Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event, which allows us to offer a playful opportunity for men to raise awareness in their community about the serious causes, effects and remediation’s to sexualized violence against women.
There is an old saying: “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” Walk a Mile in Her Shoes asks men to literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes. It’s not easy walking in these shoes, but it is fun and it gets the community to talk about something that is really difficult to talk about.
While sexual assault is no laughing matter we want people to know that men can make a difference. It’s critical to open communication about sexualized violence. When hidden away, sexualized violence is immune to cure.
We are so proud and fortunate to have such strong support for this cause and this event here in Pierce County. With over 150 walkers last year we know that the support to end the silence was heard loud and clear. The supportive men, women and youth from this community helped us to raise an amazing $21,040 last year and we are excited to surpass that amount this year.
So please take a couple of minutes to register to walk and encourage others to join you on April 28th in this fun and important event.
Registration the day of the walk begins at 11:00 am, with the walk commencing at noon.
